What Operating Systems are supported by the MediaMVP?

The MediaMVP is Supported under WindowsXP Home, WindowsXP Professional and Windows 2000 (Services Pack 3 or above with Internet Explorer 6 or higher REQUIRED).

Will the MediaMVP work under Windows2003 Server?

Currently, the MediaMVP is not fully supported under Windows 2003 Server.

Error: “Cannot locate GUI server” when trying to connect.

The lastest version of MediaMVP software has improvements to network connections. Please download and install the MediaMVP beta version from http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support_mediamvp.html

Windows2000 users: If you are running Windows 2000 you need to make sure that you have the up-to-date version of Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer 6) and at least Service Pack 3 installed.

WIndowsXP and Windows2000 users:

Make sure that the Server PC and the MediaMVP are on the same Hub, Switch or Router.

Also verify that the MediaMVP services have started. To verify this, click on Start / Run and type in Services.msc Click OK. You will see a list of Windows services which are running. Look for the MVPMedia and MVPMediaSVC services and make sure that they are Started and set to Automatic.

Can I use multiple MediaMVP's, one for each TV in the house?

The Latest software available for the MediaMVP located here supports up to 12 MediaMVPs on a home network.

Can the MediaMVP play DIVX (MPEG-4) videos?

The latest beta version of MediaMVP software supports the playing of DivX videos. Download and install the MediaMVP beta version from http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support_mediamvp.html

To play DivX videos, your PC needs the following:

- a DivX video player on your PC. You can download a player from the DivX website at www.divx.com. Most DivX videos with either mono or stereo audio can be played through the MediaMVP

- a fast processor in your PC. We recommend a 1.8Gigahertz or faster Pentium 4.

- Only one MediaMVP can be playing a DivX video at a time. If you have several MediaMVP's in your home network, only one can be playing DivX videos while the rest can simultaneously play MPEG videos.

DivX videos which are either 320x240 or 640x480 (NTSC) will play full screen on your TV set. Other formats will be "letterboxed" on your TV set.

Can the MediaMVP play WMA music?

The latest beta version of MediaMVP software supports the playing of WMA music. Download and install the MediaMVP beta version from http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support_mediamvp.html

To play WMA audio, your PC needs the following:

- a Windows Media 9 player. A Windows Media 9 player is available from the Microsoft Windows update site.

What formats are currently supported?

Video:
MPEG1 and MPEG2 video files, plus DivX (see requirements here to play DivX videos)

Digital pictures:
JPEG and GIF image files

Music:
MP3 audio files and M3U, PLS, ASX and B4S playlists

How can the MediaMVP be connected to the PC or Network:

The MediaMVP can be connected to the PC either directly, using a crossover cable, or through a network by connecting it to a Hub, Switch or Router using a straight through cable.

What is the difference between a Straight-Through cable and a Cross-Over cable?

A Straight-Through Ethernet cable connects your MediaMVP to your computer through a Hub, Switch or a Router. Both the MediaMVP and the computer must be connected to the same Hub, Switch or Router.

A Cross-Over Cable connects the MediaMVP directly to the PC using your network card.

Can I remotely access the MediaMVP without using the remote control?

If you download the 'Batch file to turn on the MediaMVP user interface on your PC', located here in the MediaMVP support page, you will be able to control the MediaMVP from the host PC without using the remote.

This batch file will turn on the MediaMVP user interface on your PC. Once turned on, the Host PC's Monitor will display a mirror of what you see on your TV set with the  MediaMVP. After running this file, you can control the MediaMVP from either the MediaMVP (via its remote control) or from the PC.

NOTE:
Video files played through this will continue to play on the TV until it has finished. There is no way of stopping video playback through this. Other functions like Picture display or MP3 music will not run until video playback has finished.

How do I access files located on other PC's connected to the network?

  1. Stop the MediaMVP services. Click on Start, Programs (or All Programs), Hauppauge MediaMVP, and then Stop.
  2. Locate the My Computer icon on your desktop or in your Start menu. Right mouse button click on the My Computer icon and select Manage from the drop down menu. Click on the “+” sign next to the Services and Applications listing and then click on the Services sublisting.
  3. Locate and right mouse button click on the name MVPMedia and select Properties from the drop down menu.
  4. Click on the Log On tab and then select the radio button that says This account
  5. Type in the username that has permissions to access the network and the local desktop, basically the user that has administrator rights to the computer. Once you have entered the username type in the password for that username.
  6. Click on the Apply button and then the OK button.
  7. You will need to repeat Steps 3 thru 6 for the MVPMediaSvc service.
  8. Once you have completed these steps for both services click on the listing for Local Users and Groups.
  9. Select the Users folder.
  10. Right mouse button click on the username that you used for the MediaMVP services in the above steps and click on Properties from the drop down menu. Put a check mark in the box next to Password never expires, then click on Apply and then Okay.
  11. Restart the MediaMVP services. Click on Start, Programs (or All Programs), Hauppauge MediaMVP, and then Restart.
  12. Once the services have restarted you can now search for media on other PCs on the network that your username has access to. Click on Start, Programs (or All Programs), Hauppauge MediaMVP, and then Search for Media. Click on the button with the three dots (Browse).
  13. You will now be in the Select Directory window in which you can browse to the different directory on your system and other PCs on the network.

Under WindowsXP home:

  1. Stop the MediaMVP services. Click on Start, Programs (or All Programs), Hauppauge MediaMVP, and then Stop.
  2. Click on Start and locate Run. In the Run Box type Services.msc.
  3. Locate and right mouse button click on the name MVPMedia and select Properties from the drop down menu.
  4. Click on the Log On tab and then select the radio button that says This account
  5. Type in the username that has permissions to access the network and the local desktop, basically the user that has administrator rights to the computer. Once you have entered the username type in the password for that username.

Accessing my shared network drive with MediaMVP it says, "There are no files in the directory"

The problem is caused by the fact that the networked directory is a mapped drive. The search utility will recognize the mapped drive and will find files but the server software that drives the MediaMVP does not support mapped drives. Instead you would need to access the drive via the UNC (Uniform Naming Convention) path. The format of a UNC path is:

\\servername\sharename\directory

Where:
Servername = The Network name of the PC
Sharename = The name of the shared directory of the networked PC
Directory = Any additional directories below the shared directory.

To add the drive through the search utility you would need to click on the browse button and then go into My Network Places in the browse window and then browse to the networked PC and the shared directory where the files are stored. If you then add the directory you should be able to then access the files via the MediaMVP

This issue will also hold true for playlists. If the playlist contains mapped drive paths instead of UNC paths then the files using mapped drive paths will not play.

TCP/IP Optimization

On some Ethernet networks, you might find higher bitrate videos will stutter. Running the registry patch located here may help with higher bitrate clips. (6-8Mbits/sec)

Stuttering video on higher bitrate clips while using an Intel network adapter

If you have stuttering video on higher bitrate clips and you are using an Intel network adapter you may want to try the following. Shutdown MVP. Go into Device Manager and find the listing for the Intel Network Adapter. Double Click on it to go into the properties of the Network Adapter. Under Advanced tab look for "Offload TCP Segmentation". Set this to Disabled and hit Okay. Device Manager will flash a bit. Restart the MVP and try the clip that stuttered.

Is AC3 audio from MPEG streams supported?

AC3 audio is not supported. There is no hardware support included for AC3 audio in the MediaMVP.


Can I listen to XM or Sirius Satellite Radio with the MediaMVP?

The MediaMVP requires a URL associated with the internet radio station. XM or Sirius Satellite radio does not use a valid station Link associated with the stations. Therefore the MediaMVP will not work with these satellite radio services.
